OUR COMMUNITY

Hawaii Off-Grid is proud to be an active and contributing member of our local community. As part of our core mission and values, we dedicate 30% of our firm's work to community-based projects.

Giving back is fundamental to our identity. For the past decade, we've partnered with Family Life Center on various housing initiatives. Following the devastating Lahaina Fires, we pivoted with Family Life Center to support their disaster relief housing project, Ohana Hope Village. For two years, we've provided architectural design, renewable energy solutions, and financial assistance, helping create temporary homes for those in need.

In 2024, our founder David was honored to join the Habitat for Humanity Maui board. Since then, Hawaii Off-Grid has actively supported their rebuilding efforts for homes lost in the Lahaina Fires.

We're also deeply invested in nurturing our community's future through youth support. We fund multiple scholarships annually to help local students pursue higher education. As the preferred Architectural and Engineering Firm for Maui and Kaua'i County for the Department of Education, we work diligently to improve and maintain educational facilities. Additionally, we collaborate with the Schools Facility Authority on designing new school facilities for our keiki.

David Sellers, AIA, our Principal Architect, and Jake Freeman, our Principal Civil Engineer met on the island of Palmyra Atoll, about 1000 miles south of Hawaii. David was the Nature Conservancy's Acting Director, and Jake had just donated over $120,000 in labor to help complete a $1.2 million renewable energy project. This project sparked a lifelong friendship. When David returned to Hawaii after completing his degree in Architecture at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, they decided to combine their expertise to start Hawaii Off Grid: Architecture & Engineering.
